Communication is a human right. If your family is exploring augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), cost should not be the only thing that determines where you begin. These options offer free communication tools. This is a starting list, not a ranking or an individualized recommendation.

Free options to explore

1. Weave Chat AAC

A free, customizable, picture-and-text communication app. Its provider lists availability for iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire devices. Check your device compatibility before downloading.

2. nanoGOAT AAC

A free visual communication app with text-to-speech, starter boards, custom photo symbols, and everyday offline use. Its store listings include iPad and Android options. Follow the provider’s links for the version that fits your device.

3. Cboard

A free AAC tool using pictures and text-to-speech. Its web version offers an option for families who want to explore communication boards in a browser; the provider also links to mobile options.

4. Public AAC

A free, open-source browser-based communication tool with symbol and text boards. The provider describes offline use after the first load. Visit its setup guidance rather than assuming a store download is available for every platform.

5. For Free AAC

A free browser-based option with symbol grids, a message bar, and caregiver customization. Its current download page lists a public web app, Android internal testing, and a future iOS TestFlight release—not general availability in both app stores.

Check current For Free AAC access

Free is different from a free trial

Some AAC products offer a time-limited trial, a restricted demonstration, or paid upgrades. A free download does not always mean free ongoing communication. Check current pricing, voice access, platform requirements, privacy information, and what happens when a trial ends.

Bring it back to low-tech communication

You do not need to choose between an app and paper. Our free printable AAC boards and original communication starter kit provide another way to keep communication available. They can accompany an existing system; they are not an equivalent replacement for a personalized, comprehensive AAC system.

Choose your free low-tech AAC downloads or explore our free online communication board. Printable PDFs use our free checkout. Required contact fields, newsletter consent, and resource-use terms are shown before you submit; printing supplies may cost extra.

Choose with the communicator

Consider the person’s language, vision, hearing, movement, preferred vocabulary, and ways of selecting messages. A speech-language pathologist with AAC experience can help evaluate access and fit. A device or download alone does not replace that assessment.
